I have a Ph. D in paleomagnetism and geomagnetism from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and a B.Sc in geophysics form the University of Southampton (UK). Although primarily involved in research at the University of Washington, I also teach or co-teach the remote sensing classes offered by our laboratory. I came to the Keck Remote Sensing Laboratory in 1992 as a post-doctoral researcher working on the space-imaging radar project (SIR-C). In this project the capabilities of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar imaging were under investigation and our task was to look at the retrieval of surface roughness in desert environments. After completing this project I moved on to visible and infrared (reflected light) remote sensing. In particular two projects, one looking at mapping forest clearcutting history and its effects on flooding in the Pacific Northwest of the USA, and another detecting long term changes (seasonal and intraseasonal) in the Amazon Basin. More recently I have become involved in applications of remote sensing to hazard mitigation and planning and to urban environments. My interests have really been in applying remote sensing to environmental issues. As a longer-term goal I am interested in becoming involved with, or initiating projects that are of service in developing countries.
